St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School alumna Mia Palango is one of just two freshman starters on this year’s University of South Florida women’s soccer team.
After spending the summer playing for Hamilton United Elite in League One, a semi-pro women’s league, Palango is looking to make the most of her opportunities in Tampa.
Palango, an Ancaster native, started in each of her team’s pre-season games, recording two shots — headers on corner kicks — that narrowly missed the target.
Palango was one of 15 players from the Saltfleet Stoney Creek Soccer Club who signed their letters of intent earlier this spring, for scholarships in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The youthful USF women’s team has won top-20 votes on the United Soccer coaches' poll. The team was ranked 18th in pre-season rankings according to Top Drawer Soccer.
