How to Succeed in High School Without Really Trying - The Play
Photos by Nancy Castura
St. Mary Secondary School presented the play "How to Succeed in High School Without Really Trying" from April 16-19th.
The morning performances were sold out with students from our family of community feeder schools. Act 1 was a collective creation by the students in the cast sharing humorous stories with music and dance sequences about silly situations in math and science classes, student council and the drama club. Act II included more collective creation by the students who made light of the rules of school dances, the drama your first break up, how to be popular and on being a superfriend. It then segued into a scripted play by Jonathan Rand wherein a group of secret agents hijack a school assembly offering humorous guidelines on how to deal with it all. The Director and Producer was Ms. Kathryn Newberry, Head of Arts.

Are you ready to write the OSSLT on April 11?
All Grade 10 students must write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on the morning of April 11, 2013. Successful completion of this standardized, Ministry mandated test is a graduation requirement. The St. Mary Literacy Committee has created a variety of ways for students to prepare for this important test. We have created an Edmodo group for OSSLT preparation. (http://www.edmodo.com) It includes reading and writing quizzes that are taken from past tests. There are also materials to help students with the longer writing tasks including graphic organizers and samples. The code for this group is s5p0bx. There are also extra literacy practice materials and a tip sheet that can be accessed on our school’s website and our library’s website. And a free, healthy breakfast will be provided for test-takers that morning! There will be a special timetable that day, so please be aware of these changes.

PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH
Tip #66 – In the Christmas carol, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ the words, “He will bring us goodness and light” are repeated twice at the end of the song. It is an important message to help our children understand – Jesus brings us goodness and light for our everyday living. He shows us how to live through the Gospels, he nourishes us through the Eucharist, and he listens and responds to our prayers. For Catholics, Christmas is about so much more than gifts - it is the promise, through Jesus, of goodness and light in our lives. Parents who help their children know and understand this give their children a gift to last a lifetime.

MARRIAGE TIP OF THE MONTH
Tip #46 – Christmas can be a stressful time for couples trying to meet the demands of the season. Take a quiet moment, just the two of you, to ask each other what the most important part of the Christmas season is for each of you. When this is determined, you can easily negotiate how to change, cancel, or negotiate other obligations that are causing stress, so that you are in control. It will mean a more joyful season, with love filling the air, not words spoken in anger due to stress.
